Mortality from diseases, conditions and injuries where alcohol is a necessary cause in the Americas, 2007–09
Vilma Pinheiro Gawryszewski & Maristela G. Monteiro
Alcohol consumption has been an important cause of disease world-wide. Systematic literature reviews have shown evidence of a causal relation of average volume of alcohol consumption and chronic and infectious major diseases such as liver cirrhosis, tuberculosis, some cancers, diabetes mellitus, various cardiovascular diseases and psychiatric disorders [1]. According to the 2010 Global Burden of Diseases (GBD) [2], alcohol use is the fifth leading risk factor for the global burden of disease, an increase compared to 1990, when alcohol ranked as the eighth risk factor.
