To date, only a few neuroimaging studies assessed factors that predict relapse in alcohol dependence. One major situation often provoking relapse is the confrontation with stimuli that have been regularly associated with alcohol consumption; owing to addiction-related learning processes, these formerly neutral stimuli can become conditioned cues and evoke alcohol craving or relapse even without the presence of alcohol itself.
