Background: Building on the success of previous symposia, The University of Bath and the Society for the Study of Addiction are pleased to announce the eighth national symposium for PhD students researching substance misuse. As in previous years, the 2015 event will be open to anyone currently undertaking (or within 6 months of completing) a PhD that focuses on the use or misuse of drugs, tobacco or alcohol. This year the symposium has a new home at the University of Bath, following on from seven successful years of nurturing and development at Oxford Brookes University.
Aim: The aim of the symposium is to bring together PhD students from a range of disciplines and universities to share their knowledge and experiences and to discuss and debate addiction-related issues. Those who attend will have opportunities to learn about each other’s work and methodological approaches, exchange ideas relating to substance misuse, and network with like-minded individuals. The symposium is open to social science, health science and laboratory based research students.
Symposium details: A number of participants at different stages of the PhD process will make short PowerPoint presentations on their research. These presentations will then lead into formal group discussions, with ample time over coffee/ tea breaks and lunch for everyone to talk more informally. The day will close with a session that sums up key themes and identifies how members of the group might continue to stay in touch if they so wish.
Costs: There is no charge for attending and lunch and refreshments will be provided on the day. A number of bursaries towards travel and accommodation costs are also available.
How to apply: Please complete our downloadable application form and e-mail this to j.a.scott@bath.ac.uk. Only 40 places are available so please apply early. After the first 40 applications have been received, we will operate a waiting list system.
Timetable:
