A syndrome of hyperactivity and poor attention has been described in children for over a century and has evolved into the construct of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) (Janakiraman 2010). Although traditionally viewed as affecting only children and adolescents, there is a growing consensus that some children and adolescents with ADHD may continue to manifest symptoms into adulthood (Asherson 2010; Moncrieff 2010).

Estimates of this proportion vary from 4 to 66%(Janakiraman 2010) and prevalence rates of ADHD among adults in the general population are as high as 5% (Klassen 2010).
