Insomnia is common in recovering alcohol-dependent (AD) patients and occurs at a rate that is 6 times higher than the 10% prevalence reported in the general population. The consequences of insomnia include daytime sleepiness, fatigue, mood and anxiety symptoms, and an increased risk of relapse in alcohol dependence. Because of the risk for dependence of approved hypnotic medications, other medications are commonly used to treat insomnia ‘‘off-label.’
